What were the advantages and disadvantages of the new politics of mass democracy? Were such things as the spoils system, party machines, and hoopla-driven campaigns inevitable accompaniments of popular democracy, or could “the people” have been mobilized by a more opened and less partisan system?

Democracies have the highest chance of becoming fascist, or world war 2 italy.
Democracy, meaning rule by the people, has involved the masses since the days of Ancient Greece. It has involved partisanship and campaigning since those days too. What has changed is the willingness of the inevitable losers to take the defeat gracefully.
